Featured Talent – Sky

Introducing Featured Talent – Sky
(in his own words)

Ok! I guess  I should make this as brief as possible; my real name is Sky, I am English and I have been doing acting and professional modelling for ten years. I have an American Passport through my Father. I have been lucky enough to work in some interesting and beautiful countries and indeed work in some for many months. I have lived and worked as a pro model and commercial actor in:

* Israel
* Sweden
* Finland
* Greece
* Singapore
* Turkey
* South Africa
* Germany
* The Phillipines
* India

I have become an expert in working quickly doing catalogue work, but what really excites me is shooting editorial, and it is perhaps this, the most basic art of story-telling that triggered an interest in performing as an actor.

However, I am also a geek and proud of it – I first studied Biology in England at Undergraduate level, then undertook a post-graduate MSc In Information Technology systems. I became interested in videography & editing since I was often traveling and backpacking in countries that I worked in and some which, well, just interested me. I ended up with massive amounts of footage which needed editing, so  I studied Final Cut Pro editing and Web design in Singapore whilst working for Ralph Lauren as a model for a couple of months. This has lead me to want to pursue production as well as acting in LA. Here is my production reel:

It is is hard to say what I am most proud of professionally speaking; I just feel honoured that I have had the chance to work with so many talented people in so many different countries. I guess i have  a strong gypsy gene somewhere! I did really enjoy working in India and Asia however. One of my best jobs was to have a scene opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in the movie called The Goodnight. A friend of mine in Israel even messaged me once to say they saw me in the trailer for it on another film’s DVD :

One of the most enjoyable advert campaigns that I have done was for Budweiser  – I particularly enjoy taking the mickey out of myself and in this case we were spoofing Baywatch with fake tans et al.

Here is another video that I filmed for the BBC last year – again, more comedic which I certainly like doing:

Anyway so I am in LA now to pursue acting full time with a hint of modelling thrown in. If you are interested in seeing some of my print work here I am:

Travel is my number one passion along with making friends all over the world. At some point I shall be editing segments from my backpacking adventures. I perhaps have travelled Asia and Thailand more than 40 times ; I will always love the place, but in terms of one of the best things in my life which I have done I would say the trip of 2010. In 2010, my friend I have boat hitch -hiked to Brazil which too 4 weeks and two ships. :)

Aside from travel, I love partying, exploring, making friends, filming & editing, conceptualising shoots, impressing clients, learning the craft of acting, living life to its fullest, and learning. I like keeping fit, and adore snow skiing, frisbee, horse riding, rugby and kite surfing. I am 6 foot 1.5 and Id say I am ‘athletic’.

I fell into modelling and acting through my Mum sending photos into a competition that the English actor Tom Hardy was involved in before me. It was televised and I became involved with a top London agency as a result. It wasn’t as if I looked in the mirror one day and thought “boom!” :)

My philosophies in life?

*Sharing is caring
*Carpe diem et nocte
*Go hard or go home!

Bruce Weber is one of my hero photographers. I admire many actors but most of all I think everyone of you is involved in acting or modelling deserves to pat yourself on the back, because it takes balls to handle rejection. In fifteen years time I aim to have established myself as a top actor with a zest for life, totally grounded, with an army of love and happiness in my life. And a boat. I love boats. A boat and hostel that I own in the world.

Peace.

A picture is worth a thousand words – or none at all

My second blog in our series of how to get noticed by agencies deals with pics. Yes the infamous pics that every post you see on Facebook, every tweet on Twitter and of course anywhere else an agency can possibly think of to recruit for new staff.

Thank goodness for Talent Envy and the amazing Envy Cards that you can create and send out to agencies. However, if an agency is looking for single pics for various reasons, below are a few great tips to help your pic get noticed right away and stand out in a sea of emails.
- Label your pics! This is so important and it really helps out the booking manager if you have your full name on the pic (first-last – headshot) or (first-last – full length) etc.
- Avoid controversial labeling such as: hotmama.jpg or drunklastnight.jpg. Believe me; we receive pics like this on a daily basis.
- Avoid sunglasses and frowning. We want to see your eyes and your smile!
- Try to take at least one clear close up pic so that we can see your entire face.
- At least one full length pic is also helpful.
- Try to have a couple of pics completely unedited as most agencies would like to see the real you without all the photo shopping and airbrushing.
- One glamour close up shot that has been lightly edited is fine since those tend to be the best ones for the clients.
- Avoid bathroom mirrors, clothes and other distracting items in the background. Have a friend go outside and take a few pics of you in a nature setting or a blank wall. Natural light is usually best when it’s not a professional photo.
- Avoid pics with a lot of people in the background such as pics at a party with all your friends. Even when you crop your friends out it looks tacky as you usually can see a part of their arms, hair or hands in the pic.
- Avoid crazy poses and duck face kisses to the camera.

Have some additional suggestions on the types of pics you found to bring you success in getting booked? We would love to hear about them!

It’s all in the subject line!

You know how it goes. Whether you’re a talent applying for a gig you recently saw posted online or a booking agent and open your morning inbox with a flood of emails, uncertainly lies within. As talent, you might glance over the post a few times and try your best to convey the right selling points of your skills; select the best pictures you feel will show your true personality and attach a resume detailing everything you know about the industry. As a booking manager, we open email after email looking at the subject line to determine what events you would like to be considered for, check out the pics attached and possibly read perhaps the first page of a resume.

With the scenario above, you may wonder what really does make a talent get selected for that spot you worked so hard to convey your amazing skills.

Believe it or not it’s a lot simpler than it might seem when it comes to what really grabs the attention of the booking manager. If you think about it, when you open your inbox and get ready to sift through the emails what is the first thing you see that determines one email is going to be more important to you than another? Most likely it’s the subject line. While there are several other things in an email that we like to see when talent applies for gigs that by far is what catches our attention first.

Most agencies will have exactly what they are looking to see in the subject line and will usually spell it out in the post. For the events that do not have it spelled out the points below might be of some help.

- Your full name: Usually companies keep track of previous staff who have worked events for them, talent who have already interviewed or even names they might have seen contributing to a post on one of the social media sites. By having your name listed early in the email or even in the subject line really helps the booking manager identify who is contacting them.
- The city you are applying for an event: This is particularly important if a program you are applying for is in multiple cities.
- The program name & date: If you know the brand name then you can include that. If not, then perhaps the type of program (example: college tailgate event 11/24 – Houston, TX).
- If the post really emphasizes the need for local talent then sometimes it helps to put that in the subject line (example: LOCAL STAFF – college football event – Houston, TX). This is really important for large high profile events such as the Super Bowl or SXSW when a lot of staff is applying from all over the country. While out of towners might e good staff, agencies usually always prefer local staff so if you are local, be sure to take advantage of your location to get priority on a booking.

What have you found beneficial to include in the subject line? I would love to hear from you.
